Radford Mill Farm, nestled near Bristol, boasts a rich history that intertwines with the region’s agricultural and industrial heritage. The mill’s origins trace back to the Domesday Book, indicating its longstanding presence in the area.
In 1788, James Collins acquired Radford Mill, marking the beginning of the Collins family’s significant influence on the site. By 1840, the area had evolved into a bustling industrial hub, featuring a brewery, tan-yard, candle manufactory, and South Hill House. The Collins family played pivotal roles in this development: John Collins expanded the brewery, constructing Radford Villa (initially Mill Mead House) and the Old Malt House; George Collins established the tan-yard and built South Hill House; and Jacob Collins operated a tallow chandler business, producing candles for local miners.
The Collins family’s association with Radford Mill persisted into the 20th century. In 1976, two couples purchased the then-derelict property, transforming it into Radford Mill Farm. They initiated organic farming practices, producing vegetables, fruits, and dairy products, and pioneered a home delivery service and box scheme, positioning themselves at the forefront of the organic produce industry.
Over the years, Radford Mill Farm has diversified its activities, hosting events such as music festivals, workshops, and community gatherings. The farm remains committed to sustainable agriculture, renewable energy initiatives, and fostering community engagement, continuing its legacy as a vital part of the local landscape.
Today, Radford Mill Farm stands as a testament to the dedication of its stewards, offering a harmonious blend of historical significance and contemporary sustainable practices.
